Celeb Jersey Cards #89 Lauren Holly & Tim Robbins

This is a regular series which attempts to combine my passion for trading cards with my interest in celebrities. Today is the NHL All-Star game and I am celebrating it Celebrity Jersey Card style.

I never knew long-time favorite Lauren Holly was a hockey fan, but she is. How could I have missed that? Holly has been on my radar for a long time, but unfortunately I have never met her. Holly is definitely in my Top Ten of celebs I want to meet. Maybe when I do, I'll ask her about her favorite hockey team. Until then, I'll have to settle for a simple NHL All-Star Celebrity Jersey Card.

For those of you who are thinking this was just a cheap attempt to feature one of my all-time crushes Lauren Holly, I now present Tim Robbins, accompanied by Barry Melrose. Neither would enter my crush zone, although Melrose had a rocking mullet back a few years. Robbins is a noted hockey fan and has skated in many charity games. Coincidentally, this would have been close to Melrose's rookie year as well.

Mick Foley Is Indeed Good, Very Good

I really like Mick Foley. He first appeared on my radar as a decent wrestler who worked very hard at his craft. I watched him beat the odds and defy his critics by becoming a successful and popular wrestler who held titles everywhere he went.
When I heard he wrote a book, I didn't know what to expect, but I know it was not what I got. His fiction books are fascinating. They might not be classic literature, but they are very entertaining. The stories (and messages) blew me away.
I have met Foley several times. It is to the point that he recognizes me and jokes around on a slightly different level than he does with most people. He even did a promo for this site (which you can find in the "Testimonials" section at the right).
One of the great things about meeting Foley is that he is liable to start a conversation on any number of topics. Foley's interests go well beyond the wrestling ring. You might talk about literary effects, old tv shows or even Al Snow
Recently, I was with Matt when he met Foley for the first time at a PCW event. PCW is a local wrestling organization which always puts on entertaining shows and brings in great wrestling superstars for signings.
Foley even brought along Mr. Socko. Foley was his usual affable self. He joked about seeing me again and how I was doubling his fan base by bringing Matt to meet him.

Tammy Sytch Starts Her Day With Johngy

Tammy Sytch is the original diva of the WWE and she is a favorite of Johngy's Beat. She is also a Hall of Famer.
I have met Tammy several times and she has been great each time. One of my favorite Tammy memories was seeing her in South Bend (IN) last year at the Clash at the Cove. Because of bad weather, Tammy was delayed, but kept the promoters aware of her journey. She finally made it about 30 minutes after the show ended, but with a lengthy line of fans still waiting to meet her. She talked to a couple people and then saw me. She immediately hugged me and commented how nice it was to see a friend after enduring the travel troubles.
That's how Tammy is. She considers her loyal fans to be friends. She remembers names and locations of many of her fans. Yes, there is a line between real friends and fans and Tammy is a businesswoman, but she does go above and beyond the call of celebrity duty.
At Wizard World, I mentioned how her promo video (in the right column) received a lot of comments, she volunteered to do another newer version for me, including her Hall of Fame ring and banner. It was an offer I didn't even think about refusing! The result is shown below and also will take a permanent place in the right hand column of this site.

Autograph Tales:Larry Colton

I first knew of Larry Colton in 1977, when I read his first book Idol Time, a profile of the NBA champion Portland Trailblazers. At the time, I did not realize that Colton had pitched in the major leagues. I liked that Trailblazers team and I really enjoyed the inside look at the season.
Years later, I realized that Colton had pitched for the Phillies in 1968. He appeared on a 1968 Topps Phillies Rookie Stars card. He was traded to the Cubs in 1970, although he never made it back to the majors.
I read Colton's next book, Goat Brothers, a look at his life and the lives of four of his fraternity brothers. The book is wonderful. It is funny, poignant, informative, reflective and much more. I have read it a couple times since.
On a side note, Goat Brothers also contained a short story on Colton's trade to the Cubs. Colton's page on Baseball Reference did not mention this trade. I notified the staff there and eventually they added it to his page.
Colton has written two more books. The first was Counting Coup, his account of life on the Crow reservation in Montana. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well.
The second, No Ordinary Joes, was published recently. It deals with the lives of four submariners from World War II.
Colton has also written many articles for various publications. Additionally, he is a founder of Wordstock, a literary fest in his hometown of Portland (OR).
I wrote Colton a while back asking him to sign his baseball card. He returned it very quickly and added a promo piece for Counting Coup, along with a short note. I appreciated the extra note with the signed card. More importantly, I appreciate Colton's writing. I really hope to make it to Wordstock someday to meet Colton in person.

Rick Monday Video Hits 10,000 Views

I have written about my interview with Rick Monday several times. I won't go through all the details, but you can get them all here. In short, in June 2008, I interviewed Monday in the Dodgers clubhouse. I wrote about it for Global Traveler celebrating the 4th of July. David Stein of Sporting News Radio (now Yahoo Sports Radio) read the piece on air.
I contacted Stein who sent me a recording of him reading my Monday piece. I created a video for it. On September 28, 2008, I uploaded Rick Monday Saves the U.S. Flag to YouTube.
Three years and four months later, it reached 10,000 views! Here is the proof.

To put that number in perspective, I did some research. Less than 20% of all uploaded videos get at least 500 views. Less than 10% get more than 1,500 views. Less than 3% get more than 25,000 views.
Of course, stats can be used in many ways. The average YouTube video gets 800 views, but that number is skewed high by the handful which get millions.
What does it all mean? What is my point? Basically, I am just celebrating a milestone. Nothing more or nothing less. I am so proud and awed by that whole experience. The totality of it all has been great.

Batman Didn't Impress Me

Even as a kid, when I watched the Batman tv series, I kind of thought that Batman didn't look really tough. No, this isn't another "bash Adam West" thread (although it could be). Instead it is another "praise Motor City Comic Con" post.
As I have stated and shown before, attendees often dress in character. Sometimes they do so for a costume contest. Sometimes they do so just for fun. Whatever their reason, it is always interesting to the rest of the onlookers.
At the MCCC I met an attendee dressed as Batman. He was in pretty good shape (better than West had appeared), but he lacked height. On the other hand, why should he not indulge just because he is vertically challenged. He looked pretty good all things considered.
Other things of note in the photo include Torrie Wilson and Cookie's fan (singular). Wilson is a retired wrestler turned actress. She had a decent line throughout the convention. Cookie, however, is a current wrestler who had very few fans during the event. In fact, the guy shown might account for half of her fans.
Hey, it's all part of the fun at the Motor City Comic Con and there is always quite a bit of fun there!

Friendly Encounters:Adolfo Meets Doug Bradley

This is a weekly series about friends who have met celebs.

One reason I am happy about the new year is there will be two Days of the Dead conventions in my relative area (one in Chicago and one in Indy). After last year's inaugural event in Indy, I can't wait to see how the event is bigger and better.

The man behind the Days of the Dead cons is Adolfo Dorta and he is one interesting guy. I met Dorta in Indy last year, although it was quite a blur, since he was basically a blur. The man was constantly on the move and in demand. He was always checking things, improving things and making everyone feel appreciated.

Days of the Dead wasn't a huge convention run by a nameless, faceless company. Dorta was right there in the middle of it all. As busy as he was, he also had the look of a happy, satisfied man. I am guessing that look could be attributed to the realization of this event and the positive feedback he received from virtually everyone

After the success in Indy, a con was held in Atlanta (GA). Shortly after that, it was announced that there would be a Days of the Dead con in Chicago in 2012. I'll be there in Chicago and in Indy, too. Hopefully, I'll land some good interviews, but either way, I'll have some reports here.

In the photo below, Dorta posed with Doug Bradley, a veteran actor most known for his role as Pinhead in the Hellraiser film series. Bradley was just one of the many great celebrity guests at the con. I didn't get to meet Bradley, but by all accounts, he was very personable and fan-friendly.

Celeb Jersey Cards #88 Hulk Hogan & Brooke Adams

This is a regular feature which attempts to combine my passion for trading cards with my interest in celebrities. Today, our jersey-clad celebrities represent two teams who had great runs but exited the playoffs last weekend.

You either love or hate Tim Tebow. The same can be said for wrestling legend Hulk Hogan. The Hulkster donned Tebow's jersey for a segment on ESPN. I really like the look of this card, especially with Tebow on the screen in the background. Unfortunately for Tebow and the Broncos, the magical ride ended with a loss to the juggernaut Patriots (just like Hogan's first title run ended with a loss to a Giant juggernaut named Andre). Hogan thus becomes a two sport Celebrity Jersey Card star.

The Houston Texans battled injuries all year (including two quarterbacks), but they almost made it to the AFC championship. Representing the Texans is Brooke Adams, model and pro wrestler. Adams was born in St. Louis (MO), but spent most of her youth in Houston. Recently, Adams (as Miss Tessmacher) held the TNA women's tag titles with Lisa Marie Varon (aka Tara), a favorite of Johngy's Beat. Adams is sporting the #23 of running back Arian Foster. Who wouldn't want to tackle her?

On the Beat with Mike Bucci (Again!!)

We had already planned on covering Resistance Pro Wrestling's Rise event, when I was pleasantly surprised at the announcement that Mike Bucci would be there. Mike is a favorite of Johngy's Beat from the great time we had with him at Wizard World.
Mike (also known as Nova, Super Nova and Simon Dean, among other monikers) had a successful career in ring. He was part of the wildly popular bWo (Blue World Order) and he was a main reason for the success of ECW. His talent in the ring was amazing and his innovative moves were often imitated, resulting in him inventing new moves. He was just that good!
Mike is the "Voice of Resistance Pro". His commentary will be appreciated by fans, but his contributions to RPW will go beyond that. He has a brilliant mind for the business and he is extremely respectful to all. Actually, this is a perfect partnership for Mike and RPW...and best of all the fans!
We caught up with Mike after Rise. Mike is so cool. It was like talking to an old friend. We discussed his new role in RPW, his future and the Dallas Cowboys (his favorite team). It was a real pleasure seeing Mike again.

On the Beat with Cheerleader Melissa

Melissa Anderson started training to be a wrestler at the age of 15 under the tutelage of Billy Anderson, brother and former tagteam partner of Melissa's father Doug. The second-generation wrestler quickly became Cheerleader Melissa, after joining the Ballard Brothers (who were using a Hanson Brothers gimmick).
Over the years, Melissa has also wrestled by other names, most notably Alissa Flash and Raisha Saeed. She has wrestled for several organizations including Shimmer, for which she is the current Women's Champ. PWI ranked her #2 of the Female Top 50 in 2010.
Unfortunately, Melissa lost her bout against Sassy Stephie at Rise. Sassy Stephie will get the title shot next month, while Melissa must wait for another opportunity. Despite the loss, Melissa gave a great effort and should be proud of her performance. She is an excellent wrestler and she will get her chance down the line. She's too good to not be involved in the title picture.
Matt (aka Big Money) was able to talk to Melissa for a few minutes at the after-party following Rise. The music was loud and the lighting was low, but we were so glad to talk to Melissa. They discussed her match and her travels (Matt pulling double duty for Global Traveler).
Melissa is definitely an asset to RPW. I certainly see a Women's championship reign in her future. Hopefully, I will be there to see her become champ.

On the Beat with Sassy Stephie

Sassy Stephie had an interesting start in pro wrestling. Armed with some DJ experience and her love for wrestling, she became a ring announcer for a local promotion in Ohio. This lead to her getting trained and making her wrestling debut in March of 2007. She has gone on to hold titles in at least six organizations. She is also the #1 contender for the Resistance Pro Wrestling Women's Championship.
At Rise, the second event held by RPW, Sassy Stephie beat Cheerleader Melissa to become the #1 contender and she will face Melanie Cruise on February 17. I am really looking forward to this match.
I think the women's division of RPW is extremely strong. Cruise, Sassy Stephie, Serenity and Cheerleader Melissa are an excellent top four. These ladies can wrestle and can work the mic.
Scott Beatty (the Bobby Heenan of Johngy's Beat) interviewed Sassy Stephie after her victory last Friday. They talk about her influences, who she likes to wrestle and her future. I really love her thoughts on her ideal opponent. It's a simple, but great answer. It is really at the heart of what Sassy Stephie is. She's a talented, smart and beautiful wrestler and entertainer.

On the Beat with Serenity

One of the youngest stars of Resistance Pro Wrestling is Serenity. The soon-to-be 21 year old already is almost a four year veteran of the squared circle.
As you will hear in the interview below, Serenity is known for her vibrant colors. The bright hues are not the only reason she stands out though.
She is a tenacious competitor, with an obvious passion and dedication for her craft. Her tough demeanor is balanced by her big smile and exuberance.
On her twitter page, Serenity describes herself as "pretty rad". You have to love that. Just like you have to love the pink and purple hair.
In the interview below, Matt Parker (Johngy's Beat Executive Producer) talks to Serenity about her colors, her influences and her career. I love Serenity's thoughts on why she got into the business. It is such a sincere thought. I applaud her attitude.
I wish the lighting was better, because you really need to see the spark in her eyes to get the total picture of Serenity. I am predicting big things for this talented young wrestler.
Ar Rise, Serenity lost by pinfall to champion Melanie Cruise. Although it was a disappointment, Serenity remains optimistic and is still in the title hunt. Serenity should get another shot down the line and she will be ready.

On the Beat with Melanie Cruise

As written yesterday, we covered Rise, Resistance Pro Wrestling's second event. All week on Johngy's Beat, we will be featuring interviews we did with the wrestling talent after the show. Today, we are featuring Melanie Cruise, the first RPW women's champ.
Cruise has been wrestling professionally for almost four years and has gained a lot of success on the independent scene. In 2011, Pro Wrestling Illustrated ranked her #39 of the top 50 female wrestlers. That is quite an achievement, especially for someone so new to the sport. Perhaps an even bigger achievement is her current reign as the RPW women's champ.
Scott Beatty (the Bobby Heenan of Johngy's Beat) talked to Cruise about her early wrestling influences, her career and her future. Cruise then turned to Nikki St. John who talked about the Animal House Shelter in Huntley (IL). It is a non-profit, no-kill shelter and it is a cause near to Cruise's heart (and ours at Johngy's Beat, too).

How cool is that!? Both women stepped back from the spotlight during the interview to shine the spotlight on animals that need loving homes. Special people like this are just another reason why Resistance Pro is going to continue to gain fans and success.

Friendly Encounters:Matt Meets Billy Corgan

This is a weekly feature about friends who have met celebrities.

Last Friday, Johngy's Beat covered Rise, the second event held by Resistance Pro Wrestling. RPW is owned and run by Gabriel and Jacques Baron.
I really think RPW is something special and will see a lot of success as they continue to grow and develop. They have brought in great wrestling minds like Raven, Mike "Nova" Bucci and Shane Douglas. They have popular young talent like Colt Cabana, Kevin Steen, Melanie Cruise, Harry Smith and more. The wrestling is solid and the storylines are going to just keep building the excitement.
One other interesting component of RPW is their Creative Director. That title belongs to Billy Corgan (of Smashing Pumpkins fame). Corgan was at Rise to present the first ever RPW heavyweight championship belt to the winner of the triple threat match, which was Harry Smith. Corgan also stuck around to pose with fans after the show.
Matt expressed an interest in meeting Corgan and I am very happy he was able to take a picture with Corgan. Matt does a fantastic job for Johngy's Beat and is severely underpaid. I am glad he got that opportunity.
This begins a stretch of several days over which we will be featuring interviews we did with some of the talented wrestlers of Resistance. We love this organization, are excited to be in on it from the beginning and look forward to watching it grow and develop.

Celeb Jersey Cards #87 Bret Michaels & Aubrey O'Day

This is a regular series which attempts to combine my passion for bubblegum cards with my interest in celebrities. Today I am saluting two AFC North division rivals who both got booted from the playoffs last week.

Bret Michael Sychak was born in Pittsburgh (PA) and grew up to become Bret Michaels, lead singer of Poison. I have to admit I am not all that familiar with Poison, nor do I care to be, but I cannot deny the success Michaels has had. I appreciate Michaels waving the Terrible Towel and wearing #43 for Troy Polamalu, but I can do without the hat. A cowboy hat in Pittsburgh? The total package is good enough to earn Michaels a Celebrity Jersey Card.

On the other end of the spectrum is Aubrey O'Day, who is listed as a singer, actress, tv personality, fashion designer and model. Originally from San Francisco (CA), O'Day was a member of the girl group Danity Kane. While she does not share the same musical success as Michaels, they do have similar hair (I like Aubrey's better though). I have no idea where the Bengals connection derives, but I found no other celeb wearing the stripes. O'Day does seem to be shedding her fluff image with her recent stints on Broadway.

Beth Aldrich:Real Mom and Really Cool

Several years ago, I received a phone call from Beth Aldrich. Aside from being a wanna-be writer, I also own my own publication distribution company and Beth inquired about us handling distribution for her new magazine, fhi: for her information. I sensed from the beginning that Beth was special.
Beth is special. In fact, she is quite a dynamo. She is high-energy, very positive and all things good. Beth eventually took fyi online, thus ending our working relationship, but we have kept in touch.
Beth brought fhi to radio and to tv, before merging it with RealMomsLovetoEat.com, a site full of recipes, facts and advice. There are videos, pictures and stories. The site is very active, with new, interesting stuff going up regularly.
Recently Beth (with Eve Adamson) wrote a book, appropriately titled Real Moms Love to Eat. Like the site, Real Moms is full of friendly advice, recommendations and recipes. It also includes a 10-part plan to make gradual changes in your approach to food. The book is fun and light, but very informative and helpful. Actually, it is sort of the book version of Beth herself!
Last Sunday, I met Beth at her book discussion-signing at the Evanston Library. It was great seeing her again and getting my own signed copy of her book. I also got a quick interview with Beth about Real Moms Love to Eat.

Happy Birthday Scott

Today is my brother-in-law Scott's birthday. Although I will not see him today, I am sure he is celebrating in style.
I have known Scott for about 30 years. He is more than just my sister's husband, he is like a brother to me. I have had a lot of great times with and because of Scott. He has been there for me in good and bad over the years and I know he has my back.
Don't get me wrong though. Scott would do anything to beat me in any bet. He will cheer against my teams just to see me cringe. He gives me no breaks in any bet or competition. It has been this way from the start and I would have it no other way.
Wherever you are today, have an icy Bud Light (with a lime) on me. Happy birthday, big man!

Peter Tork Joins the Jay Leno Club

Last summer at Wizard World, Peter Tork joined the Jay Leno Club. As regular readers know, the Jay Leno Club is comprised of celebrities who have made a reference to me resembling Jay Leno.

The magic words were stated as I approached Tork's booth. I laughed about it and explained the Jay Leno Club to him. As he signed my photo, I announced his induction into the club (as captured on the video below).
I was really looking forward to meeting Tork, who as part of the Monkees, was one of my childhood favorites. Tork did not disappoint. We talked for a few moments (pretty long considering the number of fans in line) and then took a picture together.
Tork is the twelfth member (and third non-wrestling member) of the Jay Leno Club. As longtime reader, sometimes contributor and Jay Leno Club member himself Evil Zebra stated, "First a zebra and now a Monkee in the Jay Leno Club...what's next?" What is next indeed! Nobody knows, but when it happens, I will report it right here.

Andrew Alexander as Michael Myers

I ran into Andrew Alexander at Days of the Dead. Andrew was one of the most popular features there, even though he wasn't a celebrity guest.
Andrew is a Michael Myers impersonator and a very good one, too! It is fairly common to see people as characters at these conventions and many attendees will ask for photos. Andrew wasn't the average impersonator though. I don't know how he did anything, as he was consistently being asked for pictures. Of course, I had to get in on the action and nab a photo, too.

What About Him? What About Raven?

Scott Levy has been wrestling professionally since 1988, winning a load of titles along the way. He has worked as a wrestling producer, wrestling writer, booker and more over the years.
Levy is best known by the name Raven, although he has used other names. It is the Raven character which really launched him into stardom. He has wrestled everywhere in every type of match (some of which he invented). He is an innovator and possesses one of the most creative minds in wrestling. He is the type of guy that wrestling needs.
For their debut event, Resistance Pro Wrestling invited Raven. He didn't wrestle on the card, but he received a huge ovation when announced. He was also one of the most popular guests at the after party.
I have met Levy several times before and it is always cool. Raven is an unsung hero in the history of wrestling. I think his legacy will grow as the years pass and fans realize just how much he gave to the business.
Bringing in Raven for their debut event was a great movie by Resistance Pro. Their next event is this Friday, 1/13. It will be hard to top their Black Friday debut, but I know they plan on making it bigger and better. Check back here for the full report.

Michele Mupo (aka Fuchsia) has made several appearances on Johngy's Beat. Michele is a singer, song-writer, sitcom writer, agent to the stars and much more. She seems to be constantly adding titles and ventures to her portfolio.
Michele is currently working hard on her Keep the Peace video project. Michele wants to make a change and help create peace. She wants to make the music video to raise awareness to our troops. Michele is accepting donations through the site. You can get a Keep the Peace ringtone or single and you can even be an extra in the video. How cool is that?
I am hoping to be an extra in the video. I want to see this all come together and I will keep writing updates as they develop.

Henry Winkler was the Coolest

Back in the day, didn't everyone think the Fonz was the coolest? Didn't everyone mimic his trademark "Aye"?
Since those happy days, Henry Winkler has gone on to a hugely successful career mostly behind the camera. Stars of his magnitude don't usually do autograph conventions and when they do, they usually charge a lot more than the average celebrity guest.
Winkler is the exception on both counts. He has done a few conventions and he only charged the same amount as the other stars at the Hollywood Celebrities Show. That in itself provided a unique opportunity for his many fans. Winkler didn't stop there though. He went out of his way even more for the fans in attendance.
Winkler stood on the fans' side of his table, allowing for quicker and better photo opportunities. This doesn't sound like a huge deal, but it entailed Winkler standing for about 8 hours straight. It also allowed more fans to have the chance to meet him during the event.
He didn't stop there though. About every 20 minutes or so, Winkler walked past his entire line of fans thanking them for waiting and promising they would all get their time with him. How incredibly nice is that!! I have never seen that from any celebrity.
When I was growing up, Fonzie was the coolest. Now as an adult, I have to say, Winkler is the nicest!

"P Diddy" Joins the Jay Leno Club?

The Jay Leno Club is usually reserved for celebrities who have mentioned me resembling Jay Leno. On my trip to San Francisco earlier this summer, I almost had another inductee into the club.
While we were riding the famous cable car, the conductor asked my friend Jim if he thought I looked like Jay Leno. Of course, my ears perk up any time I hear "Jay Leno". I started laughing and said that I get that a lot. The conductor then said he hears that he looks like P Diddy.
Because he did bear a resemblance to P Diddy and he made the Jay Leno reference, I tried to snap a picture (which wasn't easy considering it was night and the cable car had no interior lights). I would have asked for a picture together, but he was kind of busy at the time (driving the train and all).
He doesn't officially make it into the Jay Leno Club though, because he is not a celeb. The club would be too big if I included every regular person who made the connection. Still, he gets an Honorable Mention or maybe a special plaque when I get the museum built.
If he has his own site and he has a P. Diddy Club, I wonder if he will write a similar post about "Jay Leno" joining that club.

Celeb Jersey Cards #86 Christina Applegate & Marisa Miller

This is a regular series which attempts to combine my passion for trading cards with my interest in celebrities. Today's featured cards highlight teams that won last week to help their playoff drive.

The New York football Giants beat the Dallas Cowboys to win the NFC East and make the playoffs (the Cowboys will not make the playoffs). Representing the Giants is Christina Applegate, one of my all-time favorites. Last week, I bemoaned the fact that she was not wearing a Chiefs jersey in an ad, like her showmate Ed O'Neill did. Well, Applegate more than makes up for that by wearing the Giants jersey for her Celebrity Jersey Card debut. I know she is undersized for a DE, but I am sure she would wreak havoc on defense (I wouldn't mind being tackled by her). The best #78 I could find is Greg Bishop, an offensive lineman from the 90's. I'd much rather have Applegate on my team!

The San Francisco 49ers had a great season and secured the #2 seed with a win last weekend. Jim Harbaugh has done a remarkable job coaching them. Representing them today is Marisa Miller, known mostly for her modelling work. For her Celebrity Jersey Card, Miller models #21, worn by Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. I love Miller's old school look, but Applegate still gets my vote between these two.

Al Ferrara Had No Matches

My nephew and I were spending an evening making Coke bets on old games shows and we came across a classic episode of the Match Game. Really though, aren't all episodes of the Match Game classics? I digress.
Match Game was a hilariously typical game show of the 1970's which featured two contestants attempting to match silly answers with the panel of six celebrities. Even as a kid, I sensed that this show was a bit different. Looking at it now, one only can guess what went on back stage.
We clicked over to the Game Show Network, just as the Match Game's host Gene Rayburn announced the next contestant, Al Ferrara. Ferrara stated that he was a piano salesman, but it also came out that he had played pro baseball.
In fact, Ferrara was an outfielder for parts of eight seasons, mostly for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He hit .259 with 358 hits in his career.
On this episode, Ferrara went hitless. In fact, his opponent, the reigning champ Marlena Cruz, also went hitless. They went to a tie-breaking round and Ferrara again came up empty. Cruz connected on one to retain her title. Like all losing contestants on the show, Ferrara sat forlornly as the stage spun him back into who knows where. If Al ever reads this, please contact me with any updates.
I am not sure if Marlena won the big match on this show. I know she won at least one big match ($5000) and one mid-match ($2500) over the two shows, but I am not sure which was which. Marlena was quite cute and funny. Of course, now she would have to be about 60. If Marlena ever reads this, please email me an update on yourself.
Anyway, Ferrara went away with some unknown consolation prizes. He eventually went into business for himself, starting Major League Construction, which he ran for over 30 years. In retirement, he has gone back to the Dodgers in their Community Relations department. There is a great bio on Ferrara at The Baseball Biography Project by SABR.
So the moral of this story is you can learn stuff, even from an odd game show of the 70's. Now, if I can learn whatever happened to Marlena Cruz, the story would be complete!

A JayHawk, a Wookie and a Johngy

I have met Chewbacca several times. I mean the actual Chewbacca, not Peter Mayhew, the actor who played Chewbacca in Star Wars (although I also met Mayhew, too). Confused? Hang with me for a minute.
Chewbacca is one of he regular attendees at the Motor City Comic Con. I can't be sure it is the same Chewbacca every year, but it looks the same (Chewie never ages).
It is all part of the fun, as people dress in character. Chewie is one of the most popular characters, often being stopped for photo opportunities, like the one below.
I have heard Chewie can be a bit surly, but he never gave me any problems. Last year, he waved for the camera. This year, he was smiling. Of course, if you look to the right side of the picture, you will see we were near the booth featuring Mickie James. That might have been the real reason behind his smile.

Johngy Meets Hallowicked

I am really looking forward to Friday the 13th. That is the day when Resistance Pro Wrestling holds their second show. Their debut event, Black Friday, was a tonm of fun and this next show promises to be even better.
The wrestling card was very entertaining. The action was paced well and had a nice mix of brawling, high-flying, technical and even a little hardcore wrestling. The wrestlers put a lot into their matches to make it a great time.
The night didn't end there, though. The after party was a blast, too. The wrestling talent posed for pictures and signed autographs, while selling their merchandise. All of the wrestlers were very approachable and fan-friendly. It was such a great experience.
I was happy to meet Hallowicked, one of the more unique wrestlers. Hallowicked (along with childhood friend and fellow RPW mate Icarus) was trained by Mike Quackenbush and Reckless Youth of Chikar. He debuted in May 2002 at Chikara's debut event and has been on the rise since.
He has held the IWA Deep South Heavyweight Championship, along with the NAWF (once) and PWE (twice) tag team titles. Pro Wrestling Illustrated ranked him #265 of the top 500 in 2009.

Friendly Encounters

This is a weekly series about friends who have met celebs.

Yellow M&M's have been around since 1941, when M&M's were first produced. In 1995, when the blue M&M was introduced, M&M "spokescandies" were also introduced.
The yellow M&M was first voiced by John Goodman and later by J.K. Simmons. The yellow M&M, said to be happy and gullible, is the spokescandy for Peanut M&M's. His "likes" include pretty ladies and fluffy things (he had me until fluffy things). Interestingly, yellow is absent from the pretzel M&M packs. Apparently there is some sort of rift between yellow and the pretzel community.
Earlier this year in Las Vegas, my sister ran into the yellow M&M and knew she had a great Friendly Encounter opportunity. Ironically, Jean's husband despises peanuts.

Celeb Jersey Cards #85 Jerry O'Connell & Ed O'Neill

This is a regular series which attempts to combine my passion for trading cards with my interest in celebrities. On what should have been 'Bear Down Sunday #16', I am once again featuring other teams which will not be in the playoffs (continuing the "misery loves company" theme).

More was expected of the Arizona Cardinals with Kevin Kolb (not Kyle). Instead, it was the 49'ers who rose to the top. The Cardinals (like the Bears) can finish at .500 with a win today.
Jerry O'Connell is a winner though, having a string of hits already. The native New Yorker joined the media as he covered Super Bowl XLIII, but he showed a bias in wearing the Cardinals jersey. The odd thing is that this picture seems to have been tagged with "Buccaneers" on Google (although it is clearly a Cardinals jersey). Either way, it is a Celebrity Jersey Card.

Ed O'Neill gained fame as long suffering loser Al Bundy, but O'Neill is certainly not a loser. His close proximity to Christina Applegate immediately makes him a winner, but I digress. O'Neill (as Bundy) did a promo for the Chiefs years ago. Actually, Applegate also did a promo, but unfortunately was not wearing a Chiefs jersey, but I digress again. Al Bundy proclaimed he could get in the game if the Chiefs quarterbacks were to get injured. Still, I listed him as a running back on his card, because we all know it was his position at Polk High, where he once scored four touchdowns in one game. Oddly, Bundy did not make any such ads for his hometown Bears (who could always use a backup quarterback, which brings us back to Bear Down Sunday #16). If only Applegate wore the jersey for her promo...

Interviews 2011

It was a great year for Johngy's Beat. We covered more events, got more interviews, met more celebrities and basically had more fun than ever. We talked to athletes, actors, musicians, artists, authors, wrestlers and more.
I would like to take the time to thank Fran Gallagher and Global Traveler for giving me plenty of opportunities. I want to thank all of the sports teams, especially the Houston Astros for being so hospitable. I want to thank the many conventions (like the Motor City Comic Con, Wizard World, Days of the Dead, Horror Hound, Hollywood Celebrities Show, Flashback Weekend and all other shows. I want to thank AU Sports and PCW Wrestling for granting me extra access for their signing events.

Cuzz Buzz:Marta Kristen

Johngy is taking a day off and once again, Chuck Gekas (aka Cuzz) will step in and handle the feature presentation. The fan response was positive the last time, when Cuzz presented his recap of meeting Olivia D'Abo.

Marta Kristen starred in the TV Sci-Fi series Lost in Space, which ran for three seasons from 1965-1968. The series was set well into the future and centered on the adventures of the Robinson family, aboard the Jupiter 2 traveling through space. Marta played the role of the eldest daughter, Judy Robinson, and I had the opportunity to meet her at the 2011 Motor City Comic Con.
Marta was extremely gracious and appreciative of the fans who remembered her and the TV series. She commented how much she enjoyed working with her fellow cast members, including Jonathan Harris, who played Dr. Smith, and provided conflict and comic relief to the program.
I admit I was a fan of the series even though it often resorted to campy action scenes and simple story telling. The characters made the show work and sometimes that is more enjoyable than over the top special effects. It was great to meet Marta and spend some time talking with her about the series and some of her experiences on the show.

The staff at Johngy's Beat once again appreciates Cuzz's contribution. We are also hoping Cuzz will join us again at the 2012 Motor City Comic Con.

Holiday Music Part 3:The Rock

Nothing screams holiday spirit more than professional wrestling. Okay, maybe not much holiday, but certainly a lot of spirit. For today's musical holiday treat, I am going new-old school with The Rock (aka Dwayne Johnson).
Back in the modern heyday of pro wrestling, there was nobody bigger than The Rock. A mere raise of an eyebrow brought the "millions and millions" of the Rock's fans to their feet.

Lara Fabian is a Belgian-Italian international singer. I am not even sure how I stumbled upon her, but she is one of my favorites. She has an amazing and powerful voice. I especially love her songs "Adagio" and "Broken Vow".
I was hoping to find a holiday song by Fabian, so I could highlight her beautiful voice. Fortunately, I found "White Christmas". Fabian gives her usual wonderful performance. Enjoy (or as Fabian would say "godere"!)!

Michael McKean and David Lander portrayed the characters of Lenny Kosnowski and Andrew Squigman, friends of Laverne and Shirley. They were always good for a laugh and sometimes even a musical number (which was also usually good for laughs).

A bit back, I featured my sister Nancy and a helium-filled huge balloon representation of the WIU mascot which Nancy counted as a celeb in order to secure a spot on Friendly Encounters. Not to be outdone, my nephew Matt submitted a picture of himself and the Chik-fil-A mascot. Okay, this is getting ridiculous...which is how I like things.
Matt was in the downtown Chicago area with his girlfriend Erin, when he spotted the Chik-fil-A mascot. Erin snapped the photo of Matt and the bovine (while certainly questioning his sanity...and mine, too).
The cows first appeared in 1995, accompanied by the slogan "Eat Mor Chikin". Matt became a big fan of the Chick-fil-A restaurants during his time in Houston. When Chik-fil-A expanded to Chicago, Matt welcomed them with open arms.

Bear Down Sunday #15

The Bears are 7-7, having lost 4 in a row (coincidentally all without Jay Cutler). Today they face the Green Bay Packers who are 13-1 having somehow lost to the Kansas City Chiefs last week. Today might get ugly.
I need a laugh. When I have that need for a laugh, I know I can count on my nephew Big Money to supply one.
Earlier this year, Matt and Erin ventured into cheeseland for a little vacation. While north of the border, they came across Nitschke's Northern Resort. Matt immediately knew that this would be blog-worthy.

Was he trying to steal the mojo from the Packers? Did he jinx the Bears? Did he order cheeeeeese?
One thing Matt wanted to steal was a trophy of Nitschke's.

As fans would know, Ray Nitschke is a Hall of Fame linebacker from the Packers of the 60's. I am sure he won a lot of awards and trophies during his illustrious career. So what trophy is on display and able to actually be held by any visitor?

It is a nebulous award given to Nitschke at the NFL Players Mackey Awards Banquet. Huh? Nevertheless, it is a Hall of Famer's trophy in the hands of Big Money.
Now this whole story shows several things:
1-Matt is on his way to being a first ballot Johngy's Beat Hall of Famer
2-Dick Butkus needs to open a resort (and if he does, Johngy's Beat will give him a trophy)
3-Johngy's Beat delivers all of the facts, no matter how they affect the story. Other media outlets would simply show Matt and the trophy, leading readers to believe it is the actual HOF trophy (or something similar). Here at Johngy's Beat, we promise to always go that extra mile, even if it does reveal the trophy to be something a little less prestigious.

Celeb Jersey Cards #84 Tony LaRussa & Troy Tulowitzki

This is a regular series which attempts to combine my passion for trading cards with my interest in celebrities. Today, as the Bears face domination and playoff elimination tomorrow, I am presenting cards representing two teams who are already eliminated. Misery loves company.

The St. Louis Cardinals won the 2011 World Series under the leadership of Tony LaRussa. When LaRussa appeared at a Rams game, he wore a Sam Bradford #8 jersey, instead of his usual #10. LaRussa's magic did not transfer to the Rams who enter today's game with a record of 2-12.

In six seasons, Troy Tulowitzki has established himself as one of the top shortstops in the major leagues. His career average is .294 and has won Gold Gloves in 2010 and 2011. He also has hit for the cycle and turned the 13th unassisted triple play in mlb history. He is a fan of the Dolphins and unlike LaRussa, he wore his regular #2 for his Celebrity Jersey Card. Unfortunately, the Dolphins are 5-9 and have recently fired their coach. Maybe Tulo will apply to fill that vacancy.

OMG...It's Beth Horn

Earlier this year, Johngy's Beat covered the premiere of Fancypants, an independent film co-starring Beth Horn, a Johngy's Beat favorite for many years. On the red carpet, I asked Beth for a scoop on a future project. She said she had a project (with Fancypants Director-Screenwriter Joshua Russell) in the works. She didn't reveal much, but she did give me the initials "OMG".
I figured it would be a while before I heard anything more about this mystery project. Earlier this week, the wait ended when I saw a post on Beth's Facebook page.
Beth wrote, "Check out "OMG" - a short film by Joshua Russell filmed in Chicago! :)"
She also gave the link for OMG.
Of course, I immediately followed the link to see OMG. It is a riveting 8.5 minutes of film. The short film stars Beth, her husband Bruce Butler and Brian Plocharczyk. It's got a little bit of everything and quite a bit of a story packed within those 8.5 minutes.

Sgt. Peterson and Cosmic Cut and Old School Promo

A couple months ago, I attended the Clash at the Cove 13, a wrestling show put on by the IAW (Independent Association of Wrestling) at Covelski Stadium in South Bend (IN). Former WWF wrestler Brian Costello is the main man behind this great event.
Despite weather problems and some health issues within the families of some of the wrestlers slated to appear, the show was a major success. Costello and the rest of the group did an outstanding job of delivering great wrestling action and some WWE Hall of Famers for the fans.
While hanging around the autograph area, I ran into two IAW wrestlers, Sgt. Peterson and Cosmic (Stars and Stripes). I told them I was covering the event for some websites and they agreed to do a quick promo.
They gave me more than I expected. The promo below is like old-school WWF wrestling promos. It was intense, funny and non-scripted. It was everything you would want in a great promo.
I appreciate these guys for doing the video. I appreciate their promo skills even more. If anyone should happen to know these guys or Brian Costello, please have them contact me.

Happy Birthday Jim

Today, the third member of the Tri-Gekas contingent is celebrating a birthday. Chachi's brother and Cuzz's cousin Jim is the man of the day.
Jim is not quite as petty as brother Chuck and not quite as consumed with trivial oddities as Cuzz. Jim has been a co-writer in some food-related parody songs, a partner in some "character" creations and most of all a great friend.
Although he isn't as petty as his brother, Jim and I have squabbled over some photo angles which seemingly make me look several inches taller than Jim. For my birthday present to Jim, I am showing the photo taken earlier this year. Obviously it is on flat ground with us side-by-side. Except for possible shoe differences, Jim and I are shown to be about the same height. This might be the best present I can give him (and it is at no cost to me!).

On the Beat with Rak

I have met Robert A. Kraus several times at various conventions. Kraus is better known as RAK of RAK Graphics, a business he started over 25 years ago.
RAK does some really unique and fun stuff. I especially like his line called Superfreeks, which depicts caricatures of everything from Aquaman to Chris Isaak to Rowdy Roddy Piper (just to name three of my favorites from this collection). Seriously, I don't know how many creations he has (he might not even know exactly), but there is definitely something for everyone and usually you will walk away with many Superfreek cards...I know I always do.

Friendly Encounters

This is a regular series featuring friends who have met celebs.

I met Scott Blair at Wizard World in Chicago. Actually, I saw his work before I saw him. I was meandering through the artist area when Scott's stunning art caught my eye. He was gracious enough to give us a quick interview.
His booth was full of his fantastic illustrations of some of wrestling's most beautiful women, including Christy Hemme, Velvet Sky, April Hunter and more. Scott's work is stunning. The women virtually pop off of his posters, sketches and book pages. He obviously has a great working relationship with these women who pose for him.
Recently I saw one of his Facebook posts which featured Mickie James. He commented that he was working on a new idea for her. I checked his previous work and found he hadn't done any art of her. I am very interested in what Scott has in mind for Mickie. I'd also like to see Scott do illustrations of Tammy Sytch and Trish Stratus, but that's just me.

Happy Birthday Dave

There are a lot of great people who were born on today's date. Stone Cold Steve Austin. Ty Cobb. Keith Richards. Dave Blais. Steven Spielberg. I happen to be related to one of them. Today my brother-in-law Dave celebrates his birthday.
Dave is a great guy and deserves to be center stage here today. (Besides...the usual Sunday feature of the Bears is better left unwritten...but I digress).
I have known Dave for about 20 years. He's Nanc's husband, but he is more like a friend, than just a brother-in-law to me. We've had a lot of fun together, including one crazy ride to the Rockford airport (when I was delayed in traffic getting to their house, causing us to barely make the flight). He is also a faithful reader of Johngy's Beat and my Global Traveler blog (cheap plugs).
It is a big birthday for Dave, too. Should I reveal just how big? Well, maybe I'll just say he is certainly younger than Ty Cobb. He is also younger than Richards and Spielberg. Celeb Jersey Cards #83 Stevie Richards & Joe Laurinaitis

This is a regular series which combines my passion for trading cards with my interest in celebs. Today I am featuring a football wrestling double play (or should that be 'tag team'?).

Michael Manna (aka Stevie Richards) is a favorite of Johngy's Beat. We interviewed him at Wizard World and he appeared in the background of two of our other interviews. Stevie is gold! He also has a passion for technology as evident by his site t4show.com. I guess that includes video games, too. Stevie posed with an ad for Madden 12 and earned himself a Celebrity Jersey Card. More good news for Richards, the CJC does not come with a curse like the Madden cover.

When I saw the picture below, I knew it would make for a cool card. Father and son, Joe and James Laurinaitis exchanged uniforms for the shot. Actualy, I think either could have excelled at both sports. At 6'2" and 255 pounds, James would have been a 'ram' in the ring, while the stockier Joe could have been an 'animal' on the football field (sorry...couldn't resist). In hindsight, I might want to make another version, to give James a wrestling Celebrity Jersey Card.

Usually our interviews are pretty informal. We aren't exactly 60 Minutes (although many readers say we are more enjoyable). The interview Matt did with Torrie Wilson at Wizard World was more of a conversation between two old friends than a real interview. Still, we are very happy to have logged in the former wrestling diva.
Wilson was active on the wrestling scene for close to ten years. She retired to pursue other interests (and partially because of back injuries suffered throughout her career). She had a store called "Officially Jaded" in The Woodlands (TX). The store closed a little while back, but Matt, who lived near there for a few years) talked to Torrie about the store.
Sharp eyes will notice TNA's Tara (Lisa Marie Varon) in the background posing with fans and showing off her newly won tag team championship belt).
There was more to the interview, but I'll take the blame here as I was not in a good position to capture enough to make it viable. Sometimes, space and crowd noise cannot be overcome at these events.

On the Beat with Reed Johnson

On our annual baseball trip to Houston, we scored a bunch of interviews. We had several goals in mind, plus anyone else when the opportunity presented itself.
One of Matt's goals was Cubs outfielder Reed Johnson. In his ninth season, Johnson is on his second stint with the Cubs. He has a bit of a cult following in Chicago and has even been nicknamed "Reed Mantle" by a group of his fans, including WSCR radio hosts.
Johnson just finished his pre-game drills and was heading to the dugout when Matt nailed the interview. Watch the video below to hear Johnson's thoughts on his favorite city to visit and throwback jerseys.

Yesterday I ran the first part of my Q&A with Houston Oilers legend Dan Pastorini. Today I am posting the second part, but first a bit more on the man who was one of my childhood favorites.
In addition to his success on the football field, Pastorini did some acting and also raced in the NHRA Drag Racing Series in the 1980's. His latest venture is Dan Pastorini's Quality Foods, which features a Texas-style barbeque rub. (I love the rub on chicken!)

Q-Do you have a favorite football card of yours?
DP-Not really…I guess my rookie card. Boy was I young once!

Q-Why did you decide to write such an open and honest book?
DP-Because many of my friends asked why I hadn't and I really never thought I was that interesting. So John Lopez convinced me to do it, but I told him to tell nothing but the truth. He asked and I answered many questions openly and honestly. He dug deep and I went with him. It was a cathartic journey and now I'm glad I did it. I was uncomfortable after we finished it thinking I may have gone too far in depth, but that's what people wanted to know from John's perspective and I trusted him. I think he did a great job on the journey. Now people know. What's rewarding is the fact that it has helped a few people to face their demons and fight back. That to me made it a success!

Q-What's next for you? Any projects in the works?
DP-Putting an investment package together to expand the DP Quality Foods business. I need the money to do it properly.

I greatly appreciate Pastorini taking the time to answer my questions. Interacting with him has been a great experience. It is always cool meeting childhood favorites, especially when the person turns out to be as nice as Pastorini.

A couple weeks ago, Scott, Matt and I went to see the Houston Texans play the Atlanta Falcons. Once in Reliant Stadium, Matt noticed a book-signing. As we walked to it, I was ecstatic to see Dan Pastorini signing copies of his book, Taking Flak.
I was a huge fan of his as I was growing up. The Houston Oilers picked Dante with their first pick in the 1971 NFL draft (3rd overall behind Jim Plunkett and Archie Manning). For the next nine years, Pastorini quarterbacked the Oilers, helping turn the team from a doormat to a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
His toughness on the field was undeniable as he either played through injuries or rushed back from them. He even wore the first flak jacket to protect his battered and broken ribs. Oh and he also punted for several seasons.
It was quite a thrill meeting Pastorini. He took the time with each of us to actually make it special. He looked everyone in the eye as he talked to them. It was a nice experience.
I read Taking Flak on the flight home and totally enjoyed it. Pastorini was open and honest about his life on and off the field. He doesn't tell a lot of inside stories of others, but he reveals all about himself. There was a story about a talk with his dad that almost brought me to tears.
When I got home, I contacted Pastorini and asked him a few questions which he graciously answered. Below is the first part of the Q&A.

Q-You are an Oilers legend, yet that team is now in Tennessee and the Texans are in Houston. Do you have an allegiance to either of these teams?
DP-I feel more allegiance to the Texans because they are Houston's Team. The Titans left town and changed their name which leaves the Oiler mystique as somewhat of an anomaly. We are more cult heroes than actual legacy of one team like you see with teams such as the Packers or Bears. I'm loyal to the city of Houston as this is where Luv Ya Blue remains.

Q-Would you name 2-3 players from your Oilers who you feel are unheralded or underrated?
DP-Robert Brazile, Curley Culp, Billy Johnson. These 3 men deserve to be in the HOF, but because of the above mentioned detachment from a legacy team, they are not represented and forgotten. Robert was the prototypical OLB. Without his recognition, there would have been no Lawrence Taylors. Curley was the consummate Nose Guard for the 3-4 defense. It was built for him. Billy, well you tell me if there has ever been a more exciting man in punt and kick off returns other than Devon Hester. Billy was the first! My whole Luv Ya Blue teammates were very special.

Friendly Encounters

This is a regular series which features friends who have met celebrities.
I stumbled upon a great website entitled "I Met a Wrestler", which is the creation of Daniel Donnelly. From the title, you can probably guess that the site is about meeting wrestlers, but that is the very generic view of it. In full, it is a fantastic site to read interesting, unique and heartfelt stories about Daniel (and others) meeting wrestlers. It contains interesting stories, wonderful pictures and fun interviews.
I really was intrigued by Daniel's story of meeting Tammy Sytch (a favorite of Johngy's Beat). Daniel captured the thoughts I have had many times while meeting some of my favorites (especially the female ones). We are adults, yet when we meet out heroes or crushes, we somehow return to our younger days. Are we weird old guys or are we just fans who appreciate meeting these people? I like to think we are the latter.
Daniel also perfectly captured the essence of Tammy. She remembered his name (despite meeting hundreds of people at the event). She even gently nudged him into an extra photo-op and a WWE event. It is true that Tammy is a good businesswoman, but Tammy does care about her fans and she shows it. I have seen first hand many times how well Tammy treats her fans.
I have tried to recap Daniel's story of meeting Tammy, but you really should read the entire piece. Daniel's full story is eloquent, entertaining and poignant. It is one of the best pieces I have read on meeting celebrities.
I appreciate Daniel sharing his picture here and I am sure we will see more of his stories here in the future. He has a lot of awesome stories to share. Bear Down Sunday #13

The Bears (7-5) face the Denver Broncos (7-5) in Denver. The Bears are struggling without Jay Cutler. The Broncos are surging with Tim Tebow.
The Bears will also be without running back Matt Forte. That leaves them with Marion Barber and little else at running back. That is a far cry from the Miami Dolphins of the early 70's who had three stud running backs (Larry Csonka, Mercury Morris and Jim Kiick). Zonk and Merc were probably bigger names, but Kiick lead the Dolphins in rushing in two seasons. He wasn't exactly a no-name though. He appeared on a Sports Illustrated cover with teammate Csonka.
I talked to Kiick about being a small star on a star-filled team. Kiick said he had no regrets and totally enjoyed his time with the Dolphins. Of course, his time included three Super Bowl appearances and two titles!
After a short season in the WFL, Kiick returned to the NFL with the Broncos, playing a season and a half with the team. Unfortunately, he was released midway through their Super Bowl season.
The Bears face a struggle today and for the rest of the season. The Bears should take note of the Dolphins teams of the 70's, who had backup quarterback extraordinaire Earl Morrall and a trio of excellent running backs including Kiick!

Celeb Jersey Cards #82 Christopher Knight & Mike Lookinland

This is a regular series which combines my passion for trading cards with my interest in celebs. How about a Brady Bunch double team (no, sorry not Marcia and Jan).

Christopher Knight portrayed Peter Brady, the middle Brady son. Knight regained some fame from reality tv, where he met and later starred with his wife (although they might be separated now). I am unaware of any ties Knight has with Detroit. I am assuming he was there doing promotion for one of his shows. His ceremonial pitch was a solid effort and good enough for a Celebrity Jersey Card.

One of the most famous Brady Bunch episodes involved Bobby tricking Joe Namath into coming to visit him. Mike Lookinland got to wear the full Jets uniform. I had to use a screen cap, since pictures from this episode couldn't be found. Cards from that era usually had simple headshots and rarely would you find any sort of action shot. In the world of Celebrity Jersey Cards, those guidelines don't matter.

A few weeks ago, I featured Chuck E. Gekas (aka Cuzz) on his birthday. Today, Chuck T. Gekas (aka Chachi) gets his time to shine.
Chuck is a great friend. We have worked together, played poker together and have had lots of fun together. We have traveled across this great country and even into Canada together (I still say the "incident" in Toronto was his fault, but I digress).
Chuck became a grandfather earlier this year, welcoming Charles George into the world. Chuck may be a grandfather, but to me he is a brother.
Happy birthday Chuck! I hope it's a great one (but I still don't understand his fascination with the other bridge in San Francisco).

On the Beat with Mike Quade

This one should be titled "In the Dugout with Mike Quade", but I am a stickler for consistency, so it will remain "On the Beat...". Either way, it is still an interview (or part of one) with Mike Quade. It differs from our usual efforts in that we were part of the media in the dugout for Quade's pre-game session at Minute Maid Park.
The video starts with a reporter asking about the previous night's game in which the Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves, despite striking out 18 times and making 4 errors. I am not sure which reporter brought it up.
I do know the next question was asked by ESPN's Bruce Levine (the white haired man in the lower right of the video). Levine stayed in that topic, but asked about the Cubs mood after playing so bad, yet still winning.
Matt Parker (Executive Producer, Sound Man Extraordinaire, Videographer and general all around great help to Johngy's Beat) did the actual reporting, while I filmed the event for posterity (aka right here on Johngy's Beat). Mike Quade is obvious, but the man in the green shirt next to Matt is Levine.
It's always extra fun being in the dugout for these media sessions. There usually isn't any real controversial stuff and everyone is pretty loose and jovial.

Last week, we featured our interview with Harry Smith from the Black Friday event of Resistance Pro Wrestling. Today, we are featuring our interview with Icarus, also from Black Friday.
Icarus was originally trained (with childhood friend and RPW wrestler Hallowicked) by Mike Quackenbush and Reckless Youth of Chikara. He made his wrestling debut in May of 2002, as part of the Chikara promotion's first event.
Icarus has wrestled in a few organizations and continues to gain recognition for his performance. He was named #220 on PWI's top 500 wrestlers in 2010. Icarus lost his bout at Black Friday, but I think he will rebound and start to leave his mark on RPW.
At the after party, we talked to Icarus in the side room. The lighting was horrible, but the interview itself was enlightening. Once again, Johngy's Beat contributor Scott Beatty (of AU Sports) handled the interview. They talked about about the origins of Icarus, as well as his goals past and present.
I really appreciate Icarus giving us his time and consideration for the interview. I also appreciate RPW for allowing us the access. I originally met artist Terry Huddleston at the Motor City Comic Con. I have purchased several Aquaman piece from him over the years. When I saw him at Wizard World, I took the opportunity to do a quick interview with him about his work.
Huddleston is a pinup artist and self-described "class clown". He's very talented and also a lot of fun...and he does some of the best illustrations of Aquaman out there. He doesn't just do Aquaman or superheroes, but it is a main part of his work as you will see on his art site.

Friendly Encounters

This is a regular series about friends who have met celebs.

Every year, my sister Nancy and her husband attend Homecoming at Western Illinois University (Dave's alma mater). This year, they saw WIU beat SIU 27-21, but more important to this blog, Nancy once again grabbed a Friendly Encounter opportunity.
Nancy is famous on Johngy's Beat for posing with various inanimate objects and animals in successful attempts to land herself in Friendly Encounters. Ordinarily, I wouldn't count such things as celebrity encounters, but I like her passion (and I love her dearly).
At the WIU game, Nancy found a new category of celebrity possibilities...a helium-filled balloon mascot! Nancy posed with a Colonel Rock (or Rocky) balloon. Rocky the Bulldog is the mascot of the Fighting Leathernecks of WIU.
One of these days, Nancy will pose with a legit celebrity, but it probably won't be as much fun. Until then, I will continue to feature her posed with whatever "celebrities" she finds. I have no idea what she will find next, but it will undoubtedly be fun!

The Bears (7-4) face the Kansas City Chiefs (4-7). They also face their former (and still pretty popular in Chicago) quarterback Kyle Orton. This game could go in a million directions and I won't even be watching.
Why? Because I will be in Houston, hanging with the Parker boys and the Texans.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #81 Mick Jagger & Stephen Stills

This is a regular series which combines my passion for trading cards with my interest in celebs.

Mick Jagger is a first ballot unanimous Hall of Famer. His musical career spans 40+ years. During the 'Tattoo You' tour, he wore the Eagles #21 jersey for several concerts. Why #21? I don't know why, but it belonged to John Sciarra. It seems an odd combination. I see Jagger more as a Roman Gabriel, but it is his choice and it is good enough to get him on a Celebrity Jersey Card, but I still say his position would be quarterback.

I am not a huge fan of Stephen Stills, but he is also a Hall of Fame musician. If I may borrow feature from 30-Year Old Cardboard, did you know that Stills tried out for the Monkees, but couldn't take the part due to a record contract. He then recommended his friend, Peter Tork. I am not sure of the significance of his #22. Clarence R. Scott would be the most famous #22 for the Browns, but I can't believe that is the reason Stills is wearing it. Actually Stills owns several Browns jerseys, bearing several numbers. Only one was needed, however, for Stills to merit a Celebrity Jersey Card.

On the Beat with Eliza Frye Again!

At Wizard World in Chicago, I met Eliza Frye for the first time. I learned a lot about Eliza and her work, which includes the Regalia Project, a collection of nine short stories with illustrations. Since then, I have been following the progress of the Regalia Project, have pledged a little and am looking forward to my signed copy!
Eliza is a talented young graphic novelist, illustrator and exhibiting artist. Her short story, The Lady's Murder was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2009 in the category of Best Digital Comic. Her passion is evident when she speaks of her work.
In Columbus, we caught up a bit with Eliza. The Regalia Project is moving along and there is much excitement about it. Eliza surprised us with her news that she will be moving to Paris. I don't think the budget here at Johngy's Beat will allow us to take trips to Paris, but hopefully Eliza will stay in contact and give us some updates via email in the future.
I appreciate Eliza's time and am looking forward to her future work. We wish her a lot of success and happiness in Paris. We will be following her through ElizaFrye.com and we hope you check out her website, too. Good luck Eliza and please stay in touch.

On the Beat with Scott Blair

One of the fun parts of Wizard World is roaming around the artists' tables and discovering unique creations. While meandering around, I came across illustrator Scott Blair.
Scott has done the cover art for various wrestling dvd's, including the 2005 Hardcore Homecoming event (a reunion of the former ECW talent). He has also done artwork for Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture.
When walking by Scott's table, I spotted a stunning illustration of wrestling personality Christy Hemme. As we inspected further, we saw more illustrations featuring Velvet Sky, Angelina Love, Daffney and others. The works were beautiful. You can see some of his work behind him during the video.

On the Beat with Harry Smith

I almost met Harry Smith at the Wizard World con last August. By the time I got to the Resistance Pro Wrestling booth, he was gone. Fortunately, it was announced that he would be appearing at their debut event in Chicago. That event was Black Friday, which took place last Friday.
Smith wrestled an exciting match which ended in a draw and set up a three-way for the title in January (at the next RPW show).
At the after-party, I approached Smith about an interview, which he very politely accepted. Johngy's Beat contributor Scott Beatty (of AU Sports) conducted the interview. In the background you can hear the party at Excalibur.
Obviously, we talked about his lineage and training. He is the son of the late great Davey Boy Smith (the British Bulldog) and the grandson of Stu Hart (patriarch of the legendary Hart family) and he trained in the Hart dungeon. We also discussed his career and Resistance Pro Wrestling.
Hart looks to be the real deal. Smith looked to be in great shape. He has size, athleticism and charisma. He knows and respects the business. I think Hart is going to make it huge one day.
Hart was extremely generous with his time and we greatly appreciate it. We want to thank Hart and RPW for the interview and access.

On the Beat with Richard Justice

Richard Justice is a columnist for the Houston Chronicle, a correspondent for ESPN and a fellow blogger (although he has just a few more readers). He is a well-respected sports journalist and he was an unexpected interview onb our baseball trip to Houston.
To be honest, Matt gets the credit for this one. Although I have heard of Justice, I would not have recognized him. Matt's few year stay in Houston paid off for this one.
As we were hanging near the Astros dugout, Matt spied Justice and suggested I attempt to get a quick interview. I usually listen to Matt's suggestions and this was my chance to rub elbows with a fellow journalist (although one much more accomplished than I am).
Justice gave us his thoughts on travel and Houston. I appreciate Justice's time and willingness to speak to us.

Celeb Jersey Cards #80 Jay Cutler & Jeff Fisher

This is a regular series which combines my passion for trading cards with my interest in celebrities. Quarterbacks and Bears are on the minds of most Chicagoans. Why would I be any different (no smarty-pants answers needed).

Jay Cutler is out injured and Caleb Hanie is in. Cutler has been the subject of many sports radio shows since he arrived in Chicago, but maybe now everyone will realize just how valuable he is. He is easily the best quarterback I have seen with the Bears in my lifetime. Cutler is a competitor and with enough talent around him, he could be a Super Bowl winning quarterback. He is certainly frustrated with sitting out with the injury, but I am sure his spirit will be lifted once he sees he finally made a Celebrity Jersey Card!

The Indy Colts are suffering through a horrible season mostly due to Peyton Manning's injury. The Colts signed Kerry Collins and threw their helmet into the Andrew Luck lottery. A couple years ago, Jeff Fisher (then coach of the Tennessee Titans) was criticized for putting on a Peyton Manning jersey in jest. Maybe Fisher was dreaming of a second career as an emergency replacement for Manning. The more likely scenario was that he was attempting to earn his place among the greats who have appeared on Celebrity Jersey Cards!

Friendly Encounters

This is a weekly series about friends who have met celebs.

Jack Odanovich was the first person to share a recap and picture when I was covering the Motor City Comic Con several years ago. I really appreciated Jack's help and eventually met him at another MCCC. Since then, I have gotten to know Jack a little better and also have gotten to know his father Craig, a relatively new author.
Jack dresses in full Star Wars garb while attending some conventions and charity events. He also is a photog and has the Jack Odanovich Photography site.
Jack has a lot of fun, as is obvious in the picture below. Jack apparently fell victim to a slashing (with his own sword) at the hands of Christy Hemme.
I love these type of pictures with celebrities. There are only so many standard side-by-side shots you can have (especially for those of us who meet a lot of celebs). Christy is always a good sport and I know Jack is always up for some fun at these events.

Bear Down Sunday #11 Raiders

The Chicago Bears (7-3) are in Oakland facing the Raiders (6-4). The surprisingly good Raiders are lead by the recently acquired Carson Palmer. Getting Palmer was certainly a season-saving trade.
After the injury to Jay Cutler, the Bears are hoping for a little season-saving magic of their own. They haven't signed a new quarterback yet. They are counting on third year man Caleb Hanie, who has thrown 14 passes in his three year career.
Actually, Hanie has thrown 14 passes in the regular season and 20 in the 2010 NFC championship game. Hanie went 13-20 in the game, almost leading the Bears to a victory over the Packers. A couple of offensive near-misses and some questionable calls by Mike Martz were the Bears undoing.
I met Hanie earlier this year at AU Sports (the best place for sports memorabilia). Hanie entered AU to a round of applause. He looked smaller than his reported 6'2" 235 pound billing, but he definitely looked in great shape.
Hanie was great, especially with the younger kids. He gladly posed for photos with anyone and answered all questions with patience and thought. (Bears fans can ask some repetitive questions at times.) The fans walked away happy after meeting Hanie. Kudos to him for being a great athlete guest (and kudos to AU for hosting yet another great athlete appearance.)
Good luck to Hanie as he embarks on a very important part of his career and the Bears season.

There was finally a Black Friday event that I enjoyed. The debut of Resistance Pro Wrestling was billed simply as "Black Friday" and from this reporter's view, it was a smashing success.
I first heard about Resistance Pro Wrestling at Wizard World. Harry Smith was one of their guest wrestlers manning their booth, meeting and greeting fans. The excitement level was insanely high and I knew I had to be there for their debut. Their stated goal is "To bring a unique Professional Wrestling company to you, the fans" and their debut show delivered on that promise and more.

Fans arrived so early and in such large numbers, that the doors were opened early to accommodate them. There was a little confusion once inside (but still in line), but that was settled quickly as staffers handled the line smoothly and efficiently.
The "arena" was set up on three levels. We opted for the third level (choosing a clear view over a closer position). Our seats just happened to be by the wrestlers' dressing/waiting room, which allowed us a great view of each of them as they left for and returned from the ring.
The matches were fast-paced and interesting. There were some great power moves, high-flying moves, technical moves and even some insane moves. It added up to a surprisingly good night of wrestling.
After the night of wrestling, there was a meet and greet where the talent signed photos, posed for pictures and sold some merchandise. It was great for fan interaction and we got some great pictures and a couple of interesting interviews. The wrestlers were very friendly and seemed to be havng as much fun as the fans! We will be featuring all of this in the near future.
For now, I just wanted to praise everyone involved with Resistance Pro Wrestling. I heard no complaints and a lot of compliments from the fans. I have to say, they did bring a "unique professional wrestling company to us".

Sometimes interviews are scheduled and sometimes we just walk into one. The latter was the case at the Chicago Wizard World last August when Matt walked into an interview with Torrie Wilson.
We had a full schedule of interviews already set, but when we walked up to Torrie's booth, Matt started talking to her about her store in the Woodlands (TX), very near to where Matt spent his high school years. Matt and Torrie discussd some mutual friends.
Torrie talked about retiring from wrestling due to back injuries. Fortunately, Torrie got out before the injuries really piled up. In her relatively short career in wrestling, Torrie developed a large fan base and is still remembered fondly.
Unfortunately, Torrie closed the store when she moved to California. While we are happy for Torrie, we are saddened that we won't have the opportunity to talk to her at the store (since we go back to Houston several times a year).

Matt is always prepared for interviews while on the field. It was no different when Matt saw Bob Brenly and set his sights on nabbing the former catcher and current Cubs broadcaster.
Matt uncovered the scoop that Brenly keeps a little black book while traveling with the Cubs. That book is filled with his favorite food places. Matt was unable to get Brenly to reveal any of his prized locations, but he did get him to talk a bit about travel and pizza.

On our recent trip to Houston, we spotted J.B. Shuck, one of the younger Astros, hanging around the dugout. We approached him and got a couple questions answered before he had top take his turn in the batting cage.

Shuck was drafted in 2008 and has hit pretty well in the minor leagues. He is part of the young crew, that management is hoping will blossom into the future for the team.

Shuck answered our question about his favorite city to visit. This lead into a different direction and we learned a little about Shuck's interest outside of baseball.

Autograph Tales:Don Strock

When naming the better backup quarterbacks of my youth, Don Strock has to be near the top of that list. Actually, Strock might very well be the #1 backup quarterback of my youth.
Ironically, Strock started his career backing up veteran backup Earl Morrall, who was backing up Bob Griese. Make sense? Strock spent 17 seasons in the NFL (15 with the Dolphins, one with the Cleveland Browns and one with the Indianapolis Colts). Strock would definitely be a member of the Backup QB Hall of Fame, if there was such a thing.
After playing, he coached in the Arena League, the World League, college and also in the NFL. Strock also authored the book Behind the Lines: A Veteran Quarterback's Look Inside the NFL.
One of the biggest signs of how valuable Strock was can be found in him having several football cards. It was unusual for a backup qb to have any cards. Strock had five, two of which are shown below. Extra points for having Earl Morrall lurking in the background of the top card.
We have all heard of Hall of Famer Bob Griese, Hall of Famer Dan Marino and Bernie Kosar. Now, hopefully you know a bit more about Don Strock.

This is a weekly series about friends who have met celebs.

I have known Scott Beatty for many years. I first met him at AU Sports about 15 years ago. Now he is running AU Sports.
Have I mentioned that AU Sports is the #1 source for baseball cards (and other sports memorabilia)? I am not just saying that because Scott is a bud. AU was the best before Scott got there, but it has gotten even better with Scott running things.
If you want an old baseball card, you will find it at AU. If you are looking for oddball cards, you will find them at AU. Sports chat? AU. Sports trivia with the staff and regular customers? AU. Bad jokes? AU when Scott is there (okay, sometimes he has good jokes, too...but I couldn't keep saying nice things about him, could I?).
Scott is a good guy and knowledgeable on the business. He is also knowledgeable about wrestling. When Scott shared a picture of a wrestler he met, he started with Ric Flair, one of the greatest of all time. Scott met Flair at the National, where AU was exhibiting and Flair was appearing. Wow...Beatty and Flair. Now there is a tag team for the ages. Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo indeed!

Happy Birthday and RIP Lizzy Wroblewski

Today would have been my mom's 82nd birthday. Unfortunately, she passed away about 2 months ago. I couldn't bring myself to write anything at that time, but I wanted to acknowledge her today.
My mom was not the easiest person to understand. She wasn't very open, nor was she expressive of her feelings. She was my mother though and I knew she loved me (and my sisters).
Nancy, Jean and I got together to write a short good-bye to mom. We wanted it to be genuine and not over-the-top. We wanted to show that our mom was a special person.
Below is the result. Below that is our cousin Ernie who read the piece at the post-service lunch.
Elizabeth "Liz" Wroblewski was a devoted wife of 53 years to Frank, mother to Nancy, Jean and John, mother-in-law to Scott and Dave, grandmother to Laura, Matt and Sam, sister to Mary and friend to many.
Liz was a private person, often keeping to herself, but everyone in her life felt her love. Sometimes she had trouble expressing it, but she deeply loved her family and was especially proud of her grandchildren. Although she couldn't travel far, she was there in spirit for Laura's musical performances, Matt's recent college graduation and Sam's volleyball games.
Her strength and determination allowed her to persevere and overcome life's challenges. It also meant she usually (and by that we mean always) got her way, as family, friends and even her nurses soon found out. Queen Elizabeth, a name lovingly bestowed upon her by many, was not to be denied.
Liz always had a big sweet tooth. Whether it was homemade pastries by lifelong friend Butch, chocolate cookies from Calumet Bakery or chocolate nut cookies from granddaughter Laura (her newest personal sweet-maker), Liz was always in the mood for sugary delights.
One of Liz's pleasures in recent years was going to the gambling boats. Even during her recent lengthy hospital stay, the thought of a trip to the gambling boats was more than enough incentive to motivate her through her therapy sessions. Fortunately, thanks to Jean and Scott, she was able to make one last triumphant return to her friends at Majestic Star followed by a meal at Michael's, her favorite restaurant.
If there are slot machines in heaven, surely Queen Elizabeth is sitting in front of one now.

There is one last note I must add. I cannot adequately express my thanks to the many people who showed their love and support to my family during that time. Cousins drove in from Ohio. Fran flew in from Philadelphia. Cuzz, Jason, Kim, JayHawk, Jim, Chachi, Louie and Effie all showed up. If it wasn't a sad event, it would have been one heck of a party.

Celeb Jersey Cards #79 George Wendt & Kevin James

This is a regular series which combines my love for trading cards with my interest in celebrities. I'm sticking with the Blackhawks.

George Wendt is a native Chicagoan and a big sportsfan, but he isn't one of the obnoxious, overexposed celebrity fans. Wendt seems like a nice guy and I even forgive him for his part in the "superfans" (oh please let that die already). Wendt was part of a celebrity puck shooting contest when he wore #16 and earned his first Celebrity Jersey Card appearance. I think Andrew Ladd was #16 when the picture was taken, but I'm guessing Wendt's jersey honored Chico Maki (no offense to Ladd).

What is native New Yorker Kevin James doing in a Hawks jersey? James is a noted big fan of all teams New York (as noted by his Mets jersey card). I think this is from a game he attended with Vince Vaughn (see previous statement about overexposed fans). I actually like James, but I still think he broke the jersey code here. You don't see (former co-star, New York native and a Johngy favorite) Leah Remini prancing around in a Hawks jersey....sorry, I got distracted by that image. Anyway, despite the potential jersey infraction, he still earned the right to be a Celebrity Jersey Card 2 sport star.

Cuzz's Beat:Olivia D'Abo was "Wonder"ful

Johngy is taking a much-needed day off. Filling in for him today is Chuck "Cuzz" Gekas. Cuzz is Johngy's partner in the highly acclaimed Backup Catcher Hall of Fame project, Johngy's Executive Producer on some videos and an all around great friend to Johngy. In Johngy's absence, he is the perfect fit to take over the site for a day (but sorry Cuzz...it is not going to be renamed Cuzz's Beat).

Olivia D'Abo is a London born actress, probably best known for her role as Karen, Kevin's sister on The Wonder Years. She has also been in numerous motion pictures, had recurring roles on Law and Order:Criminal Intent and the SciFi series Eureka, and is also an accomplished singer and song writer. Johngy and I had the opportunity to meet Olivia at the 2011 Motor City Comic Con. She proved to be as friendly and engaging as she is beautiful, during our conversation with her. While she has achieved many notable performances in her career, to some of her fans, Olivia still will always be known as Karen, Kevin's sister on The Wonder Years.

The staff at Johngy's Beat appreciates Cuzz's willingness to step in for our fearless leader. We also look forward to more contributions from Cuzz in the future!

Bill Apter Joins the Jay Leno Club

As previously explained, the Jay Leno Club is a group of celebrities who have made some sort of comment about me resembling Jay Leno. Long time journalist Bill Apter is the newest member of the club, although I might have cheated him out of an earlier entry.
Bill is considered to be the best wrestling journalist. He has been informing and entertaining wrestling fans for over 25 years. Currently he can be found at 1Wrestling.com and also at wrestling conventions. I have met him a few times and he is a great guy.
I recently exchanged emails with Bill about some of his celebrity stories. In one of his responses, he said that he remembered me from the Wrestle Reunion in 2005 and then he referred to me as the Jay Leno lookalike.
Obviously, that remark put him into the Jay Leno Club. I am just not sure if he called me that at any of the events when I previously met him. It doesn't really matter. There are no lifetime stats for longevity in the Jay Leno Club.
I am proud to induct Bill into the Jay Leno Club. The membership now stands at eleven. Who will be the twelfth? Who knows?

On our trip to Houston, Matt and I decided to set some interview goals. One of Matt's main targets was Darwin Barney, second baseman for the Chicago Cubs. Barney had a surprisingly good season for the Cubs (finishing 7th in the NL Rookie of the Year vote) and quickly became a favorite among Cubs fans.

Matt took charge by stopping Barney as he jogged to the dugout. Clearly Barney was not going to stop, but Matt worked it well. Even better, Barney didn't just give pat answers. You can see he is putting thought behind his words.

Kudos to Matt for hitting his target and even more for the way he handled it.

I can't explain Blake DeWitt. He seems like he should be a regular second baseman, but it isn't working out. I'm not saying he would be an All-Star, but he seems like he is better than the utility player he has become with the Cubs. In writing this, I just realized he is only 25. Maybe if he can escape the quagmire that is the Cubs, he could find more playing time on another team.
Twice before, I just missed getting DeWitt for a quick question. That changed on our last trip to Houston when we spotted him flipping a ball on the dugout steps. While he could still decline, at least we knew he wasn't too busy.
DeWitt was gracious enough to answer our question, although he didn't give us a concrete answer. Maybe he is just being politically correct in case he does land elsewhere in the future. Whatever the case may be, I appreciate DeWitt talking to us for a moment.

This is a regular series featuring friends who have met celebs.

Joel Quenneville made his NHL debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1978-79 season. During that same time period, Mary Jovanovich and I were part of the Sacred Heart 8th grade class. In today's Friendly Encounters, those two events intersect in a way.
Quenneville went on to have a successful 13 year playing career and is currently in his 14th season of coaching in the NHL. He will forever be loved in Chicago for guiding the Blackhawks to their first Stanley Cup win in 20 years.
Mary and I went to different high schools and lost contact sometime during our college years. A while back we reconnected on Facebook and I learned that she was married with two children. I also learned they are huge fans of the Blackhawks. They attend many games and somehow have met several players. (I just have to know her secret).
I always love posting Mary here. It's like going back in time. Hopefully, other Sacred Heart mates will appear here in the future.

Bear Down Sunday #9

The Bears (5-3 and on the rise) and hosting the Lions (6-2 and hopefully on the decline). Earlier this season, the Lions beat the Bears in Detroit on Monday Night Football. I was at that game. It wasn't pretty from a lot of angles.
It was a fun experience though. I went there with my sister Jean, her husband Scott, my nephew Matt and Tom and Rose Nestlehut. We stayed at the Greektown Hotel and Casino and had a blast watching football all day Sunday, playing Pai Gow poker whenever we could and tailgating before the Monday night game.
Okay, some of the fans there crossed the line into obnoxiousness, but most were pretty cool about things. The tailgating Detroit fans were pretty sociable, but gave us plenty of good-natured ribbings.
Some of the insanity was captured during an interview for a Detroit media outlet. Tom was the main focus of the interview, but the rest of us can be seen at various points in the video.
Hopefully today's game will be newsworth in a favorable way to Chicagoans, although I doubt any news crew will be looking for my thoughts. Go Bears.

Celeb Jersey Cards #78 Ashley Bond & Erin O'Connor

This is a regular feature which combines my passion for trading cards with my interest in celebs. After winning the Stanley Cup two years ago, the Hawks slumped a bit last season, but are in first place as of this writing. Today's Celebrity Jersey Cards features two champions who hopefully will inspire the Hawks to reclaim their championship swagger.

Ashley Bond was Miss Illinois USA for 2009. Bond is a former member of the Chicago LuvaBulls. She also writes a health blog called Body By Bond. Bond wore jersey #09 for the year she won her Miss Illinois title. She also wore her crown, which is a first on Celebrity Jersey Cards.

Erin O'Connor was Miss Illinois in 2009, but this was for the Miss America pageant (as opposed to Bond's Miss USA pageant). (I can't be the only one to find that confusing.) O'Connor had previously been Miss Macomb (IL). Like Bond, O'Connor also wore her crown, but unlike Bond, she wore #19. Was that an homage to current star Jonathan Toews or was it in honor of former defenseman-turned Hawks GM Dale Tallon? I'm guessing JT.

On the Beat with Rain Pryor

As I wrote earlier this week, last Friday, I enjoyed an evening of comedy featuring Marc Price at Riddles Comedy Club. Marc wasn't the only comedian that night. Rain Pryor also performed. It was my first time seeing Rain in person and I walked away very impressed.
I could write pages on Rain's life and career, but you can find that info elsewhere, like on RainPryor.com. She has such an impressive resume (actor, vocalist, author, comedian, producer and more). She has had her battles in life, but has overcome them and is now a happy mother and wife.
While most of that is well known, I am here to tell you that she is one of the sweetest, coolest people I have met. When I contacted Rain about talking to her at the show, she replied with "but of course I will". It was a great start, but the best was actually seeing her perform and talking to her later.
She was hilarious, as she covered topics like motherhood. She totally floored the crowd with her fantastically accurate and humorous impressions of her father (the late great Richard Pryor).
I introduced myself to Rain after the show and we went back into the show room to talk for a few minutes. That chat is below. She is so natural and funny.
After the interview, we talked for a few moments and I walked away feeling so good about the experience. Rain just is so sweet and genuinely personable. I left thinking she is truly beautiful in every sense of the word.
I interview a lot of people, most of whom I am already a fan. I usually am happy about meeting and talking to my interview subjects. With Rain, I felt all of that and I simply felt good about life.

Several weeks ago, while spending an afternoon of silliness, Coke bets and pizza with Matt, we saw The Game Show Network joining the Big Money fan club.
A Big Money Marathon? What could possibly be next? Whatever it is, Johngy's Beat will be there to cover it.

Autograph Tales:Kim McQuilken

I grew up with some Hall of Fame quarterbacks, but everyone knows about those guys. That's why I am featuring the lesser known quarterbacks (otherwise known as the backup quarterback). Today, Kim McQuilken gets the star treatment.
McQuilken spent seven seasons in the NFL, four with the Atlanta Falcons and three with the Washington Redskins. He also played one season with the Washington Federals in the USFL. McQuilken got most of his playing time in his first three seasons.
While he did not achieve stardom in pro football, McQuilken became an Executive Vice-President at the Cartoon Network. Let's see Steve Bartkowski do that!
McQuilken signed an index card for me many years ago. After leading the 1976 Falcons in passing attempts, I thought he stood a great shot at getting a card in the 1977 set, but Topps went with the more established Bartkowski and the veteran Scott Hunter.
I am sure most everyone remembers Bartkowski and Joe Theismann, two of the qb's whom McQuilken backed up. Now I hope that you will also remember Kim McQuilken!

On the Beat with Marc Price Again!

When we last talked to Marc Price, he was appearing at the Days of the Dead convention in Indianapolis. Marc invited us to his comedy show that night, but we couldn't make it. He also mentioned he would be appearing at Riddles in Chicago (home base area for Johngy's Beat). I have kept a watchful eye on the Riddles site and when I saw Marc's appearance set, I marked the date.
I had seen Marc do comedy in Las Vegas a few years ago and he was very funny, but last Friday he was hilarious. The entire audience roared as Marc joked his way through family, dating and his career. I don't remember one joke bombing. He was simply in the zone...on fire...lights out.
After his set, we hooked up with Marc for an update from our last interview with him. The video below covers a bit of his career along with his current projects, including co-Producing the Green Collar Comedy Show for Showtime.. He answered our questions and provided a few more laughs.

Today, Josh is presenting a report from the NWA Fanfest, a great event for wrestling fans. I'll let Josh take it from here:
NWA Fanfest is a yearly highlight for me as it is for any wrestling fan who attends. Although this year was a bit of a longer trek than normal being that the event was held in Atlanta, I knew that I couldn't pass it up. Dozens upon dozens of wrestling stars from all eras of the sport converged to meet the fans and reunite with one another. Although names such as Rowdy Roddy Piper, Rob Van Dam, Mr. Wrestling II, Stan Hansen, Nick Bockwinkel and many others highlighted fans "Must Meet" lists, it was the inclusion of female legend Leilani Kai that was my goal at the 2011 edition of Fanfest.
Meeting Leilani's partner Judy Martin at the 2009 Fanfest, I had already "completed" half of the Glamour Girls tag team. Many fans will remember the team's matches against the Japanese Jumping Bomb Angels in the WWF. Both Leilani and Judy had equally impressive singles careers with Leilani being The Fabulous Moolah's evil protege during the famous Rock 'n Wrestling era. Leilani was kind enough to do an interview for my own blog leading up to her Fanfest appearance. For various reasons Leilani had not appeared in the wrestling scene for nearly a decade.
One of the highlights of Fanfest is the annual Hall of Heroes banquet. Each banquet table has a group of fans and one wrestling legend. To my surprise, I was seated with Leilani, Judy, and fellow legend Joyce Grable. Having dinner and discussing the wrestling business with these three wonderful ladies was an experience I'll never forget.
There are so many stories of fans finally getting to meet actors, musicians, and athletes only to be disappointed after all their years of fandom. I can honestly say that Leilani went above and beyond any expectation I may have had. Ms. Kai is a truly wonderful person who was surprised at the reaction of her many fans. I'm honored that Leilani and I have continued to stay in touch since Fanfest. I'm also happy to report that the wrestling world needs to be ready...Leilani Kai is back!

Bear Down Sunday #8 (Really on a Monday)

The Chicago Bears (4-3) are facing the Philadelphia Eagles (3-4) tomorrow. This is sort of a Global Traveler battle with a celebrity connection thrown into the mix.
I am based out of Chicago. The Global Traveler world headquarters is based out of the Philadelphia area. The rivalry is a natural, except Chicago hasn't done much to make it a competitive one. Like most Chicago fans, I remain optimistic.
As for the celebrity connection, earlier this year, former Eagles star Vince Papale was the Guest of Honor at GT's annual awards event. Papale was a walk-on who became a cult hero and the subject of the movie Invincible.
Papale was one of the best celebs to appear for GT. His speech was inspirational and humorous. He eagerly posed for photos and signed pictures. He also stayed around all night talking to everyone and sharing stories of his career and the movie. It was a great time.
With all due respect to my fellow paison Papale, I am still hoping for the Bears to crush the Eagles tomorrow!

Celeb Jersey Cards #77 Will Smith and Kobe Bryant

This is a regular series which combines my passion for trading cards with my interest in celebs. It also helps to sharpen my PhotoShop skills. The pictures are real though, but the cards are not.
On Monday the Bears play the Philadelphia Eagles. I'll give the Eagles their due today, because there will be no love for them tomorrow!

The Fresh Prince was born and raised in West Philadelphia, at least according to the theme song of the Fresh Prince tv show. Actually Will Smith was born in West Philly. In the series, the Fresh Prince moved out to LA. Life imitates art as Smith also headed west as his career skyrocketed. Even so, he hasn't turned his back on Philly as evident by the card below. The card design and picture cropping left little of the Eagles jersey visible, but enough for Smith to appear on his first Celebrity Jersey Card.

Kobe Bryant is also a native Philadelphian, as is his father Jellybean Joe Bryant, a former NBA player with the 76ers among other teams. Kobe was born during Joe's time with the 76ers. I am not a big fan of Kobe, but I have to give him credit for wearing Donovan McNabb's #5 on his Eagles jersey and his Celebrity Jersey Card.

Beck Seashols describes herself as a "doodler, story teller and dork". That screamed out to me and I had to meet her at the recent Wizard World event in Columbus (OH). Beck was gracious enough to give us a few minutes of her time.
Beck has done cool drawings of subjects including female superheros (like Batgirl, my favorite), cute children, Star Wars characters and a lot of other topics. Beck's website is self-billed as "the cutest place on the internet" and I have to agree with that claim! Her work is precious without being sappy. My sister Nancy (who doubled as my videographer) was so impressed that she bought one of Beck's books. Beck is always ready to do commissioned art work, too!
We talked about her drawing, the convention and more. It was such a pleasure meeting Beck and seeing her work firsthand. Hopefully, we will see Beck at a convention in the future and get more updates from her!

More Fun with Ivan DeJesus

Yesterday, I ran a short and funny segment with Cubs coach Ivan DeJesus. The fun didn't end there though. DeJesus would give us one more laugh later in the night.
After talking to DeJesus, we still had interviews to get and about two hours before the game started. Like always, we hung out around the batting cage. DeJesus was hitting fungos to the infielders. When he saw us again taking pictures and filming the events, he decided to strike a pose for us.
I have a newfound appreciation for DeJesus. I think I am finally able to forgive him for 1981!

On the Beat with Ivan DeJesus

Last year, I had a chance to do a quick interview with Cubs coach Ivan DeJesus. Unfortunately, it was a day wrought with problems and the video was corrupted and unplayable. I asked him about his son, Ivan DeJesus Jr., who was playing in the Dodgers organization. Pops DeJesus spoke positively about his son's chances with the Dodgers.
Pops DeJesus was a decent hitter and solid gloveman for 15 seasons in the majors. Son Ivan looks to be a better hitter, but a little lacking on defense. Ironically, in his brief stint with the Dodgers this season, Ivan's hitting was below par, but his fielding was about average. Ivan is also seeing more action at second base, while Dee Gordon (another second-generation player) appears to be the future shortstop in LA.
When we approached Pops DeJesus, he said we had to be quick. When we asked a couple of quick questions and ended it, he expressed his surprise at the quickness, to which Matt echoed his earlier request for us to be quick. We all had a bit of a laugh about it, but we weren't done with DeJesus, as you will see in the near future. Until then, enjoy this quick video of DeJesus.

Friendly Encounters

This is a weekly series about friends who have met celebs.

During all of my coverage of Fancypants last month, Shawn Goughler contacted me about some celebrity stuff. We exchanged a few emails and I learned that Shawn has had quite a few celebrity encounters.
I asked him to share one of his experiences and he graciously answered back positively. I will let him take it from here.
This picture was taken at the Halo Lounge in Atlanta (GA) around Christmas of 2008. I have been friends with these guys for years. Since they travel back and forth from LA to NY and other places they don't get to Atlanta too often so we all get together when we can. Blair Redford is currently working on the new ABC hit show "The Lying Game". It is a great show. You should check it out. Blair will be filming the 2nd season soon. Travis Winfry will be back in Atlanta to film the second season of "Single Ladies". To learn a bit more on Winfry, you can click here.
I really appreciate Shawn reaching out and contacting me and his willingness to share his story. It's always fun seeing new faces and new celebs here. I hope to have more from Shawn in the future.

Happy Birthday Cuzz

Today is the birthday of Chuck E. Gekas (aka Cuzz). Cuzz is the cousin to the brothers Chuck and Jim Gekas. It's funny because I am friends with all three of them and each friendship is unique and means a lot to me.
Cuzz is my partner in silliness with such projects as the Backup Catcher Hall of Fame. He is one of the founding fathers of the 3-1-1. He has done some work behind the camera for my interviews on Johngy's Beat.
Cuzz is a great friend and I appreciate his friendship greatly. Happy birthday Cuzz!

Celeb Jersey Cards #76 Dick Butkus & Mike Ditka

This is a regular series which combines my passion for trading cards with my interest in celebs. The Bears have a bye week, but I didn't want to ignore them, especially coming off 2 wins.

I will lead off with Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus. Butkus was a local Chicago kid who became one of the most ferocious tacklers in the NFL. Nobody was tougher, yet I learned in Las Vegas earlier this year that he is also one of the nicest people I have met. I am not sure how he would do on ice, but I know he would have looked great with the Indianhead on his sweater, as he shows on his Celebrity Jersey Card.

What Butkus was to the Bears defense, Iron Mike Ditka was to the Bears offense. The Hall of Fame tight end took the Bears to the Super Bowl as a coach and became a Chicago icon. Ditka would also have done the Indianhead proud. He still looks good in it, as seen on his Celebrity Jersey Card.

Autograph Tales:Steve Myer

In my never ending quest to bring recognition to the backup quarterbacks of my youth, I am featuring Steve Myer, a member of the expansion Seattle Seahawks. Actually, Myer played his entire four year NFL career with the Seahawks.
For the first year of the Seahawks existence, undrafted Jim Zorn was the starter and veteran Bill Munson was his backup, with Myer as the third string. It was thought that Zorn's scrambling ability was a primary factor in him originally getting the nod. Myer became Zorn's primary backup the next year and stayed in that role for three years before retiring.
Years ago, Myer sent me a signed picture along with signing my index card. Myer never had a football card. Back then, football card sets were smaller and bad teams like the Seahawks rarely had two qb's represented.
As always, I close with my salute to backup qb's. You probably remember Jim Zorn, but now you might remember Steve Myer, too!

On the Beat with Sara Richard Again!

In August at Chicago Wizard World, I met and interviewed Sara Richard for the first time. Last weekend at the Wizard World con in Columbus (OH), I again got to talk to the talented young illustrator, author and sculptor.
Currently, Sara is a freelancer and she has worked on projects for Hasbro, too. Her creations are fascinating, beautiful and really just cool. Her subjects are varied, although her site states that she is "developing a style that incorporated my love of Art Nouveau and wildlife (mostly the extinct kind)".
In our first interview, I failed to ask Sara about her work with the Manchester Animal Shelter and her fascination with dinosaurs. I took care of both questions this time, along with getting an update on her latest work. I hope to continue to see Sara at these events and to keep getting updates. I also plan on purchasing some of her artwork the next time I see her.

On the Beat with Unshaven Comics

At the recent Ohio Wizard World convention, I literally stumbled into a quick interview with the guys at Unshaven Comics. I have wanted to talk to these guys for a while, but somehow missed them at other conventions in the Chicago area.
Matt Wright, Marc Alan Fishman and Kyle Gnepper and the creative force behind Unshaven Comics. Their stated goal is "to make comics, make friends and gain a legion of fans". The trio's first printed effort was "The March", a fictional account based on the 2006 Chicago event which saw 400,000 people march against a change in immigration law. Since then, Unshaven Comics has released Disposable Razors #1, #2 and #3.
I got to meet Matt, Marc and Kyle and see all of their cool offerings at their booth. Kyle gave us a quick rundown of Disposable Razors #3, while Marc and Matt (looking very friendly and very unshaven) made a couple of appearances.
These guys really are a talented team. I hope to meet these guys again at a future con and get an update on their future projects. Last weekend, I spent time with my cousins in Columbus (OH). While there, I went to the Wizard World convention and spoke to a handful of the featured guests.
I have been to many Wizard World cons (Chicago, NY and Philly) over the years, but this was my first in Columbus. It is always a great event. This one was a bit smaller than the others, but a fantastic event.
I have been a faithful reader of the Funky Winkerbean comic strip for more than 30 years. When I saw that its creator Cartoonist Tom Batiuk was a featured guest, I contacted him about an interview and he graciously agreed.
I could have talked to Tom for hours (although he probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as I would). The Funky strip has covered so much ground, from silly to serious. There is so much material and so many possible questions and that doesn't even include John Darling and Ed Crankshaft, his other two famous strips. We talked about how he kept the comic strips fresh, why and how he decided to deal with some serious issues, the Funky time leaps and more, including a small scoop for 2012, which will be Funky's 40th anniversary!
Tom has created such funny and multi-layered characters. The depth of his characters and stories have had lasting impacts, such as Lisa's Legacy Fund, stemming from a character's battle with cancer.
I really appreciate talking to Tom. Having basically grown up following his creations, it was a real pleasure and a thrill. I look forward to what the future holds for the Funky Winkerbean strip, especially during his big 40th anniversary year. I hope to meet Tom at a future con and hopefully he will talk to us again about the latest happenings.

I talked to Ryan Dempster a few years ago. That Dempster interview is on YouTube. When I asked him about his favorite city in which he's played, he responded with "Chicago". Maybe he was being a "homer", but he seemed very sincere enough.
On our recent trip to Houston, I asked him about his favorite city (not necessarily where he played). He did not reply "Chicago". Therefore, I think this adds confirmation to his previous answer.
In the video below, Dempster discusses his favorite city and why he was throwing a football in the outfield. Ryan is a real class act. Dempster loves Chicago and Chicago loves him!

Friendly Encounters

This is a regular feature about friends who have met celebs.

I first stumbled across Dawn Montefusco while researching WordStock, a literary festival in Portland (OR). Dawn (nicknamed ZigZag for her introverted and extroverted phases) is a writer, social media consultant, life coach, blogger and more based in the Portland area.
She has a couple of sites. One is her professional site. The other is her blogsite Ms. ZigZag and it is full of ...well just about everything and anything. That includes poetry, adventures, introspection, fun with friends and much more either serious, silly or somewhere in between, but all interesting.
Recently, ZigZag met Joe Rogan, an actor and comedian and a favorite among my friends. Now, I will turn it over to ZigZag...
When I bought my ticket to see Joe Rogan at Helium Comedy Club in Portland, Oregon I had no idea what I was in for. I had only heard him on podcasts and youtube, but I have always loved his sharp wit, crass sense of humor, and progressive intellect. Needless to say the show was amazing. Joe performed for about 90 minutes and was hilarious for every minute of it. The crowd went crazy for Joe. For a guy who spews the word f*** endlessly, and brags about pot smoking, Rogan was amazingly cerebral and astute on some serious topics: aging, gay rights, death, religion and the like. This is one of the reasons I have such a huge crush on the man. But there was a catch. 80% of the crowd was men (mostly big guys in baseball caps) and the women that showed up looked slightly annoyed, like they were only there to satisfy their boyfriends. I've never seen so many sour-puss faces on females. Granted, Joe was making some intense jokes, but hey this is comedy and Joe loves to push to the edge. Lighten up ladies.

After the show Joe and the other comics were in the lobby and took pictures and provided autographs to everybody. He was really sweet and patient with everyone. I can't wait to see him again.
I really appreciate ZigZag sharing her story. I have never met Rogan, so this is as close as I could get for now. Maybe someday, I'll catch Rogan at one of his appearances and I'll have my own story to tell. Actually, I'd like to meet ZigZag someday, too. Until then, I hope you enjoyed ZigZag's and I hope you will check out her site. You won't be disappointed.

Bear Down Sunday #7

Today the Bears (3-3) are playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-2), their former division rival. Both QB's (Jay Cutler and Josh Freeman) are having good years. It's nice not to hear cries for the backup quarterback for once, although I am a big fan of the backup quarterback in general.
Continuing my plight to give recognition to the backup quarterbacks of my youth, I am featuring Mike Rae. Rae starred at USC, leading the Trojans to an undefeated season, a Rose Bowl win and the National Championship in 1972.
Rae was drafted by the Oakland Raiders, but played three years in the CFL before playing in Oakland. With the Raiders, he backed up Kenny Stabler for two years, before moving on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he backed up Doug Williams. He finished his NFL career with one season with the Washington Redskins, backing up Joe Theismann. He moved on to the USFL, playing two seasons before he retired.
Rae is one of only a handful of players who played for the CFL, NFL and USFL. He was part of the 1976 Super Bowl Champion Raiders.
Rae sent me the signed 8x10 below when I wrote him a note asking for an autograph. I am grateful for the photo, I just wish it was color to show the cool creamsicle jerseys of the old-school Buccaneers. You all remember Stabler, Williams and Theismann. Now, hopefully you will remember Mike Rae!
